Episode 147: Kindness Is Bags Without Barriers—Providing essential supplies so all individuals can be successful.

Justin Osei-Dwumoh joins Anitha to talk about his amazing initiative called Bags Without Barriers.

When Justin realized that not everyone has access to essential school supplies—items that are not only necessary to succeed in school, but also can affect one’s self worth, he decided to help.

Partnering with organizations such as Herschel Supply Co., Justin fills backpacks with paper, pencils, markers, and more. Then, he hands them out in areas where the need is great.

In addition to helping students, Bags Without Barriers also supports underserved new moms by providing them with diaper bags filled with vital supplies to help them and their children.

The perfect episode to showcase the meaning of compassion, important all year round, but especially meaningful at this time of the year.

Episode 142:Kindness Is Continuing To Fight For Rainbow Spaces—Protecting LGBTQ+ youth

**This episode does mention suicide and may trigger or be challenging for some listeners. Please be kind to yourself.**

Nadia Kean-Ayub returns to talk to Anitha about her organization called Rainbow Spaces and the current environment in the United States towards folks in the LGBTQ+ community.

It has been just over a year since Nadia was originally on the show and sadly, a lot of communities in the United States feel unsafe, including LGBTQ+. Fortunately, there are people like Nadia who continue to support and advocate for communities who have been marginalized and in some cases fear for their safety.

Nadia created Rainbow Spaces, a place where youth can gather and be who they are, without fear of discrimination.

Episode 116: Kindness Is Everyone Is Welcome Here

Earlier this year, an Idaho middle school teacher was told by their school district to take down a classroom sign that said EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE. The reason given by the district was that the sign was deemed “a violation of the district’s content neutrality policy”. The teacher refused to comply.

Upon hearing this story, Boise Idaho resident, Chris Stewart, wanted to support the actions of this brave teacher. Chris talks to Anitha about how his initiative to create t-shirts with the same words as the sign, EVERYONE IS WELCOME HERE, brought an entire community together.

Chris also talks about some of his other acts of kindness—

Buying a realistic doll and donating it to a nursing home—folks with dementia often find these dolls a source of great comfort.

Rallying his community together to help a 93-year-old war veteran. Chris shares the story of Mac, a war veteran who was out with his family when some teens threw eggs and several of the eggs hit Mac. Chris inspired his community to raise funds to treat Mac to a new wardrobe, a limo ride, and a dinner at a nice restaurant for Mac and his family.

An engaging conversation with someone who shows how our voices can make a huge difference in helping others.

Episode 92: Kindness Is Creating Freedom Farmhouse

Emily Bott joins Anitha to talk about purchasing a property in 2018 that turned out to house a colony of 16 feral/barn cats. Emily and her partner, Dylan decided not only to allow the cats to remain on the property, but worked hard to gain the trust of the cats so they could be spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Life for the cats was so good, they eventually chose to live inside with Emily and Dylan!

These cats now enjoy being warm, safe, lounging on soft beds and so much more!

In the six years since moving to the property, Emily and Dylan have expanded their rescue journey to include farm animals such as donkeys and goats.

The farm’s mission is to provide compassionate care, rescue and sanctuary for animals in need. Emily shares some really heartwarming stories of the animals on the farm.

A regular Sunday morning walk to the dog park turned into a nightmare for Eleanor and her dog, Indi.

In an instant, their lives changed forever, when two dogs, off-leash and trained to hunt and kill other animals, pursued and trapped Indi on the muddy bank of the river. Despite Eleanor’s heroic efforts to fend off these dogs and save Indi, Indi did not survive and Eleanor herself was severely injured in the attack.

Eleanor with her 3-year-old nephew going for a walk when she was well enough for 1-hour hospital leaves.

In spite of this great loss, Eleanor and her husband Tom have focused on the kindness they received from their family, their community and people from all over the world.
